Intentionally breaking the fast on any day in ramadan is a major sin in islam and requires repentance and an “atonement” or “expiation” called kaffarah. Breaking one’s fasting deliberately requires a makeup fast and necessitates expiation. The first 60 fast will be continous and the second 60 fasts would be continuous.

An Expiation (Kaffarah) Is A Penalty That Makes Up For A Violation.


Applying surma into the eye or rubbing oil on the head and then thinking that the fast is broken, to eat and drink intentionally. Breaking a fast means this: If you break fast intentionally in ramadan without any excuse, you have to keep 2 months of fasting continuously to make up for one fast.

In conclusion, if a person deliberately did not fast any of the days of ramadan, he must make them up according to the view of most of the scholars. If one is not capable of fasting two consecutive months, then one must feed 60 of those in need for each fasting day intentionally violated. If the man intentionally broke his fast by having sexual intercourse, then he must make up (the fast) and also make an expiation in addition to repenting to allah.
